Chief Carole MacGregor, female chief of the Bear Clan in Kanawake, joins Rev. Diane, Katharine Childs, Sandra Hunt, guest song leader Jane Critchlow and the worship team to consider the meaning of motherhood and the Spirit Bear. This is a multigenerational service celebrating a very special "bearthday" as we mark Spirit Bear Day! We'll learn about this special bear and the impact he's had in protecting and supporting First Nations children as they fight for their rights to health care and clean and safe schools, homes, and communities. Chief Carole McGregor will also share her perspective on Indigenous motherhood in honour of Mother's Day, as we explore the ways we can all make a commitment to reconciliation and care.
Spirit Bear is a member of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council and is part of the team at the First Nations Caring Society who represents the 165,000 First Nations Children who were impacted by the First Nations child welfare case at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, as well as the thousands of other children who have committed to learning about the case and have taken part in peaceful and respectful actions in support of reconciliation and equity. In June 2017, Spirit Bear was awarded an honourary "Bearrister" degree from Osgoode Law School, and in October 2017, he was officially admitted to the “Bear” by the Indigenous Bar Association.
