Early Autumn Prayer

Spirit of Life,
Source of light,
Ground of our being,
Named and unnamed,
Remind us how it is that we find the centre of who we are.

How do we remember
what it means to live
when loved ones are lost,
when friendship is challenged,
when heartache comes
as we witness
the autumn of life?

The trees are turning golden,
October light has come,
the clouds hang lower in the sky,
the days drift towards the deepening shadows,
while the full moon remains bright,
hiding the stars,
and daring the morning to arrive.

This thing of loving,
of caring,
of being in community,
of watching old friends struggle,
of witnessing the final days,
of seeing how the body changes
with time and illness,
it hurts.

The tears remain stuck
in our throats,
we are wordless,
waiting,
helpless at times,
doing whatever we can,
to offer support,
when support is welcome.

Still, may we give thanks,
even as we struggle with
the fragility of being human.
For transformation comes,
more often than we realize,
in a touch,
a smile,
a moment of peace,
that changes everything.

May we allow ourselves
to temper our worries
with appreciation
for what is going well,
for each day that we wake,
for each breath,
for each moment of kindness,
given or received.

Amen
