Strength for the Days Ahead
Meditation by Rev. Diane Rollert
February 12, 2022
Perhaps you couldn't see it
on the city streets,
but yesterday the snow
glistened in the bright sunlight,
the sunset lit the last
of the clouds in flaming orange
until the skies cleared
and the stars announced themselves
for the first time in weeks.
Here on this tenuous place we call home,
we are at the mercy of the elements,
the shifting of the earth's plates,
the changing climate.
We share the burden
of all we do not understand,
the unfairness of lives lost
before they've hardly begun,
the witnessing of human cruelty
and greed,
even as we know
there are many greater acts
of human kindness.
Oh Source of Love,
Beloved One,
Compassion,
help us to do what is right and good,
reassure us that we can still share joy
for each moment that is ours.
Help us to find meaning
in the love and support we offer each other,
in the tears we shed together,
in memory of all the loss
that weighs upon our hearts.
Help us to gather strength,
for the days ahead,
for the work that must be done
to clear the rubble,
to heal the wounded,
to nurture the children,
to hold onto our dreams
even as our confidence has been shaken.
Let love speak for us
when we can no longer find the words.
Fill our hearts with the memory
of every moment of joy
we have ever known —
an overflowing cup of gratitude
to sustain us,
beneath the beauty of shining stars.
