A New Year's Prayer

by Rev. Diane Rollert
January 7, 2023

The clouds are rolling
low and heavy
across the mountains,
sinking, as a blue sky emerges
to let the sun break through.

Motion, revelation, hope.

Black shadows of the trees
stretch across the snow covered hills,
pines glisten green in the light,
as the wind forces them to dance.

Resilience, curiosity, tenacity.

I'll take this day with gratitude,
and try to lower my expectations
of what I should pray.

I'll open my heart
to the uncertainty
of this new year,
as much as I will try
to learn how to accept
the trials and gifts
of the one that has passed.

The shadows are as beautiful
as the contrasting snow,
the swift moving clouds
as compelling
as the tranquil sky
they reveal.
