In honour of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rev. Diane Rollert
17 January 2021

Spirit of Life, Source of Love,
how challenged we are
to let go of our own privilege,
power and control,
to place love at the centre of all we do.

As a child so long ago,
I heard the words of Martin Luther King
for the very first time:

"I have a dream..."
Even then I cried for all that was incomplete.
Even now, those tears still well up inside me.

Oh Source of All,
how far we have fallen from his dream,
how much work we still have to do
to bring racial equality to our world,
to bring economic justice to our communities.

On days like this, we need to admit
how far from the mark we have fallen.
On days like this, we need to find
both forgiveness and courage
within ourselves,
and from whatever it is that gives us strength,
be it our values or a higher power,
to let go of our silence and complacency.

Blessed Spirit of Love,
we need dreams.

We need powerful dreamers
who can lead us out of despair.
So may it be in our lifetime.
So may it be in our hearts.

Amen.
